Having played every role from streetwalker to saint over the course of six decades, and having racked up every conceivable award in the process—not least, the coveted Israel Prize—Gila Almagor is the reigning queen of Israeli stage and screen. Though she’s also been dubbed Israel’s answer to—by turns—Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Meryl Streep, this Haifa-born force of nature is a true original, as you’ll have two opportunities to see at the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center.

On Wednesday, May 17, we’ll screen the widely acclaimed film, The Summer of Aviya. Adapted from her autobiographical novel, this gripping look at a mother-daughter relationship explores themes of post-Holocaust trauma. After the film, Almagor will be in conversation with Dr. Eva Fogelman, a psychologist who cocreated the earliest therapy groups for children of Holocaust survivors and organized the first Conference on Children of Holocaust Survivors.

Movie followed by a discussion with Gila Almagor and Dr. Eva Fogelman, moderated by film historian Dr. Eric Goldman
