Purim Unplugged

Thursday, March 5

6:30 PM

Each year on Purim, Jews across the planet don costumes and masks, create deafening noise, eat too many hamantaschen and drink until we can’t tell the difference between cursing Haman and blessing Mordechai.

What does such crazy behavior have to do with the triumph of Queen Esther and her cousin over Haman? How do masks relate to their victory? Why is God absent from the story? And why do we rarely discuss the ending: Jewish revenge?

The Streicker Center is honored to present a panel of rabbis from Hadar — the only full-time, gender-egalitarian yeshiva in North America — to talk about the enduring traditions of Purim, the ancient story and its resonance at a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise and how #MeToo is reshaping male-female relationships.  Live music and hamantaschen included!

  • Rabbi Elie Kaunfer
  • Rabbi Avi Killip
  • Rabbi Aviva Richman
  • Rabbi Ethan Tucker
